Biological Nitrate Removal With Emerald Ash Borer-Killed Ash and High-Tannin Oak Woodchips

چکیده

Two common tree species, ash ( Fraxinus sp.) and oak Quercus sp.), could provide readily available media for denitrifying bioreactors that use wood-based carbon biological nitrate treatment. However, it is not known if the wood from Emerald Ash Borer-killed (EAB-killed) trees an effective source removal compared to other species or high-tannin nature of inhibits denitrification potential. This lab-scale study showed EAB-killed woodchips did significantly differ in potential a commercially blend hardwood chips. neither treatment performed as well these metrics. Use currently restricted by federal standard United States. beneficially exhibited lowest nitrous oxide production potential, their dissolved phosphorus leaching fell within range woodchip types. borer-killed be located affected regions merit additional investigation application bioreactors.

Differential utilization of ash phloem by emerald ash borer larvae: ash species and larval stage effects

1 Two experiments were performed to determine the extent to which ash species (black, green and white) and larval developmental stage (second, third and fourth instar) affect the efficiency of phloem amino acid utilization by emerald ash borer (EAB) Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) larvae. 2 EAB larvae generally utilized green ash amino acids more efficiently than those o...

Ash Decline Assessment in Emerald Ash Borer Infested Natural Forests Using High Spatial Resolution Images

The invasive emerald ash borer (EAB, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire) infects and eventually kills endemic ash trees and is currently spreading across the Great Lakes region of North America. The need for early detection of EAB infestation is critical to managing the spread of this pest. Using WorldView-2 (WV2) imagery, the goal of this study was to establish a remote sensing-based method for map...

Biotic and abiotic factors affect green ash volatile production and emerald ash borer adult feeding preference.

The emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is an exotic woodborer first detected in 2002 in Michigan and Ontario and is threatening the ash resource in North America. We examined the effects of light exposure and girdling on green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh) volatile production, and effects of light exposure, girdling, and leaf age on emerald ash bore...

Identification of the EAB infestation in Michigan began when iridescent green beetles collected from dying ash near Detroit were submitted to Michigan State University Department of Entomology in June 2002. On July 9, 2002, the beetles were conclusively identified as A. planipennis by Dr. Eduard Jendek of Slovakia, the world aut...
